Former Vice President Joe Biden said he had $280,000 student loans.

After an occasion at Keene State College in New Hampshire throughout the end of the week, an understudy approached Democratic presidential up-and-comer Joe Biden and requested that he guarantee her that he wouldn’t overlook undergrads should he make it to the White House, the former vice president and the strongest candidate for 2020 presidential election to beat president Donald Trump, shared some thoughts to tackle student loan debt.

Hear Him: “No, I don’t forget college students,” Biden said. “I put three kids through college and graduate school.

“I ended up with a debt of over $280,000,” he added. “I get it; I’ve forgotten more about it than you’ll ever know.”

Lower monthly payments: If you’re enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, Joe wants to lower the amount you pay for your student loans each month. Under current income-driven repayment plans, you could pay 10-20% of your discretionary income each month. Biden wants to lower that amount to 5% of your discretionary income.

But You Have To Know This: Income-driven repayment plans may offer a lower monthly payment, but your student loans are still accumulating interest. If your goal is to cut your interest rate and save money on interest, student loan refinancing allows you to receive a lower interest rate on your student loans.

No student loan interest or payments: If you earn $30,000 or less each year, Biden said you should have not have to repay student loans or have interest accumulate on your student loans.

But You Have To Know This: Watch out for student loan interest. Here are some ways to save money on interest and pay off student loans faster.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Biden supports public service loan forgiveness, a federal program that President George W. Bush initiated in 2007. President Trump proposed to eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which would impact borrowers who borrow a new student loan after July 1, 2020. In its place, Trump proposed a single income-driven student loan repayment plan, which would provide student loan forgiveness after 15 years for undergraduate student loans and 25 years for graduate student loans.

But You Have To Know This: The public service loan forgiveness program forgives federal student loans only. If you have private student loans, you need a game plan for student loan repayment or student loan refinancing.

On Free Community College

Joe Biden wants to make community college free, a position that many of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates support.

He stopped short of his previous position that all four years of public college should be free, saying instead that he supported two years of free community college, “cutting in half the cost of four years of college at a state university.”

“We’re going to cut back on what’s owed by people who go to private college,” Biden said, adding that he would reduce the monthly student loan payments for people enrolled in income-driven repayment plans, in which bills are capped at a percentage of a borrower’s income.

Student Loan Forgiveness

Biden, who said at one point he had more than $280,000 of student loan debt after putting three kids through college and graduate school, did not mention a plan to cancel all student loan debt. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), also a 2020 presidential candidate, has proposed to cancel all $1.6 trillion of student loan debt for the nation’s 45 million borrowers. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), another 2020 presidential candidate, introduced legislation in June to cancel student loan debt for more than 95% of borrowers, and would entirely cancel student loan debt for more than 75% of Americans with student loan debt.

Free College

What’s more, if an understudy advance borrower gains under $30,000, Biden stated, they wouldn’t be required to pay anything and intrigue wouldn’t amass on their obligation.

A crusade representative said Biden will before long discharge an arrangement for “making advanced education reasonable and open to all Americans.”

Advanced education master Mark Kantrowitz said Biden’s arrangement doesn’t make any huge waves.

“He doesn’t propose to excuse understudy credits, even in a focused on way,” Kantrowitz said. “They won’t pull in much consideration from twenty to thirty year olds.”

Video Description: With Americans’ student debt now over $1.5 trillion, Hasan looks at how the federal government turned the Department of Education into the largest bank in America in terms of loans, and examines the department’s relationship with loan servicers. These private financial companies have benefitted from Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ hands-off regulation that has made it easy for students to become trapped in debt.

A significant number of the real contenders for the Democratic selection, including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, have discharged strong designs to address worries about raising understudy obligation and school educational cost.

Sanders’ arrangement would delete all $1.6 trillion of exceptional understudy obligation and make two-and four-year open schools educational cost and obligation free. Warren has proposed dispensing with the expense of educational cost and charges at each open two-year and four-year school, and dropping $640 billion of understudy obligation. Harris has said she would make junior college free and four-year open school obligation free.

In New Hampshire, Biden said there ought to be “school pardoning for open administration, in case you’re locked in,” an evident reference to the officially existing open administration advance absolution program.

Marked into law by President George W. Hedge in 2007, the open administration program permits not-for-benefit and government workers to have their bureaucratic understudy advances dropped following 10 years of installments. Be that as it may, the program has been tormented by issues, and over 99% of candidates are rejected.

“You’re going to do fine,” Biden told the student at the New Hampshire rally. “Your parents are making a great sacrifice having you here at a private university.”

“This is public,” the woman corrected him. “It’s Keene State College.
