Photos: Akwa Ibom varsity final year student drown in river

A final year student studying Marine Biology at Akwa Ibom State University, Godwin Edet, have been confirmed death after drowning in Akwa Ibom river.

The sad incident happened on Monday 23 March, 2020 when he went to swim in the river in company of unidentified friends.

According to reports, Godwin Edet went to swim in company of some guys (yet-to-be identified) at the borrow stream with the excuse that the normal stream isn’t hygienic.

“His friends who could not rescue him later ran into the village and raised alarm and later went into hiding for fear of the unknown”

FINAL YEAR AKSU STUDENT DROWN IN STREAM

A young 400 level Marine Biology student of Akwa Ibom state University named Godwin Okade, yesterday, Monday, 23th March, 2020, in company of some unidentified friends went for a swim at a makeshift stream suspected to be an abandoned borrow pit/quarry site filled with water.

The said water usually flows into the Ikot Ukwa Stream in Ekim town along the road leading to Ndon Obodom(not far from Ikot Akpaden) in Mkpat Enin LGA.

According to our source, luck ran out of the young energetic guy who also plays football upon returning after swimming across the water, he began to struggle as he got tired and drowned. His friends who could not rescue him later ran into the village and raised alarm and later went into hiding for fear of the unknown.

Sadly, before the villagers arrived he was no where to be found.
It took the intervention of the Senate President of Aksu Parliament, Sen. Linus Okon who complained to the Nigerian Police who later found the body after conducting a search operation after about 24 hours in company of the deceased parents, students and villagers.

Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has assured the school administration that they will investigate and give them feedback in less than a week, after the matter was report to them by the SUG.

However, AKSU issued a statement while confirming the death of Godwin, saying: “We regret to announce the exit of a student of Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, Godwin Edet. Who until his death was a Final year student of Marine Biology department in the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

“Godwin had been missing before the search party found his remains where he reportedly drowned. We as a family are saddened reporting a second student’s death in one month.

We pray for the repose of Godwin and God grant his close friends and family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss”.
