Arsenal tipped for Wilfred Ndidi transfer as Lucas Torreira replacement

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will need a better option than Torreira this summer, says pundit who reckons Leicester ace Ndidi would ‘definitely’ switch to the Emirates.

Arsenal have been tipped to sign Wilfred Ndidi as Mikel Arteta looks to turn his side back into top-four Premier League contenders.

A transfer would be unlikely to happen until the summer, with Ndidi’s club Leicester currently third in the table and battling for Champions League qualification.

However, Ndidi’s style would be perfect for new Arsenal boss Arteta.

That’s the view of pundit and former England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who says Ndidi would “definitely” want to join the Gunners.

Agbonlahor said Gunners boss Arteta will need to sign a “better” midfield option than Lucas Torreira in the summer.

“I still don’t think he’s the player who is going to take Arsenal to that next step,” Agbonlahor said of Torreira, speaking to Stadium Astro.

“I think even Arteta will look at him and think ‘he can do a job now’ but maybe when the summer comes he might be looking for someone with more legs, someone better.

“I think he is [good] for now but it’s because probably Arteta can’t go out and buy players in January, he might have to wait until the summer.

“So for the players he’s got available in that squad, I think Torreira’s the best option he’s got at the moment.”

When the prospect of Arsenal signing Ndidi was put to Agbonlahor, the former Aston Villa hotshot said: “Yeah, I think the way he’s been playing for Leicester, he’s got the legs in midfield, he can play the ball forward as well, he can win the ball back.

“But Leicester are doing better than Arsenal at the moment so they’re not going to sell their players.”

Asked whether Ndidi would want to join Arsenal in the summer, Agbonlahor said: “Definitely. I think with the history Arsenal have got, they’re still a massive club.”

Torreira is currently sidelined with a muscle injury picked up during Arsenal’s draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.
